Building a Website

Picking a good domain name is the 1st step in having a successful website. Here are some tips to follow when choosing your domain name:

  • Choose a “.com” domain – a domain name that ends in “.com” is more recognizeable by most people. It looks more professional too!
  • Incorporate your targeted keyword in your domain name. For example, if you are promoting fast muscles growing pills, you could have your domain name as FastMusclePill.com. By incorporating your keywords into the domain name, it helps your SEO efforts and make it easier for people to remember your site.
  • Keep it short and catchy – The domain name should not have more than 3 words in it. Making it short and catchy is the key.

To check if your domain names are available, go to namecheap.com and enter your domain name and do a check. It will tell you whether it’s taken or not.

Once you have found a good, catchy domain name that is not taken, you can register your domain name at Godaddy or Namecheap.com. It costs around $10 to register a domain name for a year.

However, if you get a hosting account at Bluehost, they will give you a free domain and you can register your domain name with Bluehost.

Bluehost is the best website hosting company that I know of.  For a cheap $6/month, you can host unlimited # of domains, you get excellent support, and plenty of bandwidth.

Building a Website and Steps To Get Your Site Online

Once you have an idea of what you want to do, the next step is to build your website or blog. There are disadvantages and advantages to each of these choices.

With a website, you have more control over the design and layout and you can incorporate powerful features. However, it requires some skills and knowledge of HTML, CSS, and javascript to be able to build a good website.

With a blog, it makes it very easy for you to add and update content. In addition, blogs are very good for search engines like Google. There are also lots of good templates and plug-ins that you can purchase and download right away.

You can either choose one or the other. If you don’t want to create your own site or blog, you can always find good templates around or use a good website building tool.

Keys to Building an Effective Website

Building a quality website is key to your success. Your site must convey trust, professionalism, and usability. Using the right color combination, writing good copy, and having good images/graphics are important factors that determine the success of your site.

It is recommended that you stay away from all the ”bells and whistles”. All the heavy graphics and flash can distract the visitors attention. Try to make it as simple and focused on the topic as possible.

Here are what a good website should have:

  • A banner like header that brands your website.
  • A nice photo of the product.
  • A Heading Statement at the top of the web page that summarizes what the website is about.
  • A Few Subheading Statements to define the different sections of the website.
  • Some bullet points that highlights the benefits of the product.
  • A Footer where you include your copyright and links to the privacy statement, disclaimer, contact us, thank you pages, etc.

Below is the layout of what a good website should look like.

Options to Build Your Website

If you lack the design and technical skills to build your website, you have a few options to have your website built:

  • Outsource it – It doesn’t cost that much money to have someone build your website for you. You can go on Craigslist to post and ad and have people bid to build your site. You can have a simple website built for you for $100-$200.
  • Use a XsitePro – XsitePro is an awesome website building tool. It has lots of good free templates, graphic images, and other great features that enable to build a great looking website in the shortest amount of time.
This tool is created for the online marketer in mind. With this tool, it makes it very easy for you to quickly set up a professional looking website that is optimized for the search engines.
I recommend you to get this tool if you want to be able to quickly build professional looking websites. And if you become good at it, you can even build websites as a side job.

Website Hosting

After you’ve built your website, you need to register for a domain name and a hosting company to host your website. The best domain name is something that incorporate the keyword related to your product and it is short and easy to remember (I.e. weightloss.com, BeautySecrets.com, etc.).

A good place to register for your domain name is GoDaddy.com. DO NOT USE their hosting or any other services. I’ve tried using them for hosting and it is not user friendly at all!

Some good places to host your sites are Bluehost and Host Gator. The benefits of using Bluehost and Host Gator are that for a cheap monthly price of $6-$7, they allow you to host multiple websites within the same account. They also give you an email account with your domain name for each domain.

The hosting company I use is Bluehost. So far, I really like their service and the interface is very user friendly. Once you get your domain name, you can call Bluehost technical service and they will guide you on how to setup your domain name under your hosting account. And they will also give you your first domain name free of charge.

How to Make Your Website Go Live on the Web

The last thing you need to be able to make your website go live is to use an FTP program to upload your website. A good free FTP program to use is FileZilla. Once you login with your account name and password, just drag and drop the files on your local drive to the server of your web hosting account.
