Building a Website and Steps To Get Your Site Online
Once you have an idea of what you want to do, the next step is to build your website or blog. There are disadvantages and advantages to each of these choices.
With a website, you have more control over the design and layout and you can incorporate powerful features. However, it requires some skills and knowledge of HTML, CSS, and javascript to be able to build a good website.
With a blog, it makes it very easy for you to add and update content. In addition, blogs are very good for search engines like Google. There are also lots of good templates and plug-ins that you can purchase and download right away.
You can either choose one or the other. If you don’t want to create your own site or blog, you can always find good templates around or use a good website building tool.
Keys to Building an Effective Website
Building a quality website is key to your success. Your site must convey trust, professionalism, and usability. Using the right color combination, writing good copy, and having good images/graphics are important factors that determine the success of your site.
It is recommended that you stay away from all the ”bells and whistles”. All the heavy graphics and flash can distract the visitors attention. Try to make it as simple and focused on the topic as possible.
Here are what a good website should have:
- A banner like header that brands your website.
- A nice photo of the product.
- A Heading Statement at the top of the web page that summarizes what the website is about.
- A Few Subheading Statements to define the different sections of the website.
- Some bullet points that highlights the benefits of the product.
- A Footer where you include your copyright and links to the privacy statement, disclaimer, contact us, thank you pages, etc.
Below is the layout of what a good website should look like.

Options to Build Your Website
If you lack the design and technical skills to build your website, you have a few options to have your website built:
Website Hosting
After you’ve built your website, you need to register for a domain name and a hosting company to host your website. The best domain name is something that incorporate the keyword related to your product and it is short and easy to remember (I.e. weightloss.com, BeautySecrets.com, etc.).
A good place to register for your domain name is GoDaddy.com. DO NOT USE their hosting or any other services. I’ve tried using them for hosting and it is not user friendly at all!
Some good places to host your sites are Bluehost and Host Gator. The benefits of using Bluehost and Host Gator are that for a cheap monthly price of $6-$7, they allow you to host multiple websites within the same account. They also give you an email account with your domain name for each domain.
The hosting company I use is Bluehost. So far, I really like their service and the interface is very user friendly. Once you get your domain name, you can call Bluehost technical service and they will guide you on how to setup your domain name under your hosting account. And they will also give you your first domain name free of charge.

How to Make Your Website Go Live on the Web
The last thing you need to be able to make your website go live is to use an FTP program to upload your website. A good free FTP program to use is FileZilla. Once you login with your account name and password, just drag and drop the files on your local drive to the server of your web hosting account.
